Year 10 Football Cup Winners!

Posted 13th October 2021

On Friday 8th October, our Year 10 football team played in the Liverpool School FA Tournament for schools in the north of the city. Our group consisted of Academy of St Francis of Assisi and West Derby. We beat ASFA 2-1 and drew 0-0 with West Derby meaning we topped the group and qualified for the semi-final stages.

In the semi-final, we played Alsop. Alsop currently have several professional club academy players, and our team more than held our own in the game. There was plenty of chances at both ends of the pitch, but the game finished 0-0. After 3 penalties each, the score was 1-1 and the shoot out went into sudden death. Both teams either scored or missed and it went up to the eleventh penalty before we won 5-4!!

In the final, we played West Derby for the second time, confident after the 0-0 draw in the group stages. We thought we had missed our big chance when we missed a penalty, however the referee spotted another foul on one of our players trying to score the rebound and blew for a second penalty. This one was scored by Dylan Cairns and we held out to win 1-0.

On a hot and sunny afternoon, our team played 4 games back-to-back at very high intensity, including under the pressure of a penalty shootout! Their effort, hard work and resilience was fantastic and their confidence grew as the tournament went on.

Special mention goes out to Elliott Miller and Harley Heckingbottom from Year 9 who stepped up a year group to play, and were immense in every game they played, along with captain Dylan Cairns. The winner of the South Schools Tournament was Childwall, we will be playing them in the Liverpool cup final in April.
