Attendance at school: update

Posted 8th September 2025

Important information: attendance at school

Dear families,

Thank you for helping your child come to school. We know that good attendance helps your child do well, feel happy, and make progress.

Our goal is for every child to be in school at least 97% of the time. This means no more than 5 days off in the whole school year.

Please check our term dates here: Dixons Broadgreen Academy Term Dates 2025/2026

Important changes for 2025/26

The government and local council have made new rules about attendance and fines:

  • If your child misses five days (ten sessions) without permission in ten weeks, you may get a fine.
  • The fine is £80 per parent. If not paid in 21 days, it goes up to £160. If not paid in 28 days, you could be taken to court.
  • If this happens again within three years, the fine is £160 straight away. After that, the council may take you to court.
  • If your child takes two or more periods of unauthorised leave in 12 months, or misses four weeks (20+ days) without permission, you could be taken to court.
  • If your child is ill and misses 15 days or more, we must tell the local council.

How we will support you

We want to help you and your child. We will always try to support you before any fines are given.

  • If your child has three days (six sessions) of unauthorised absence, we will invite you to a meeting. We will talk together about how we can help your child come to school more often.

Other important reminders

  • Morning register closes at 8:50am. If your child arrives after this time, it will count as an unauthorised absence (not a late mark) for the morning in their register.
  • Please make appointments (like the dentist or doctor) outside school hours if you can. If your child must go to an appointment during school, please bring them in before and after the appointment.
    • For example: If your child has a dentist at 10.30am, bring them to school at 8am, take them out for the appointment, and bring them back afterwards.

We are here to work with you, so your child can be successful now and in the future. Thank you for your support.
